Fred Korematsu Speaks Up Book Event

  • Booksmart 1295 East Dunne Avenue Morgan Hill, CA, 95037 United States (map)

Bay Area author Laura Atkins, who co-wrote a new historical book centered around the 1940s Japanese Internment camps, will be on hand from 4 to 6 p.m. May 13 at BookSmart of Morgan Hill for an author reception and fundraiser event for the Morgan Hill Learning & Loving Center.

Atkins, along with Stan Yogi, co-authored the new book, “Fred Korematsu Speaks Up,” about a Japanese man who refused to go when the U.S. instituted Internment camps in the 1940s. The book is geared toward children and adults.

Atkins will give a talk and offer a reading from the new book at the local BookSmart, located at 1295 E. Dunne Ave., followed by a wine and cheese reception, signing and raffle.

All proceeds go to support a continuing education scholarship for an immigrant woman through the Learning & Loving Center of Morgan Hill.

Event tickets are on a sliding scale between $10 to $50 (whatever you can afford). They can be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting Jordan Rosenfeld at jordanwritelife@gmail.com.

The event is sponsored by SURJ South County, a local group of individuals organizing people for racial justice. “We envision a society where we struggle together for equity, love, peace, justice, human dignity, compassion and a sustainable world,” according to the announcement.
